Dr. W. Edwards Deming (1900-1993) was probably the most profound quality guru of the 20th Century. His ideas were first published in his monumental book: Out of the Crisis (1986). It is a bold statement to make, but it is probably difficult to understand modern quality without some in-depth understanding of Deming’s teachings. Central to Deming’s teachings was the System (or Theory) of Profound Knowledge which revolves around the four interlocking topics mentioned above. Deming taught that everyone–especially top management–should constantly strive to learn about these four areas and apply new knowledge to how they think and operate. He believed that it would be difficult to implement his Fourteen Points of Management and bring about the desired transformation without their constant, underlying study. This presentation will take each of the four topics and go into depth on selected aspects that should be of interest to quality leaders. Useful examples and activities will be included.
Topics Covered (the role of leaders will be addressed for each topic):
*Appreciation of a system – understanding overall processes
*Knowledge of variation – the sources and amount of variation along with sampling theory
*Theory of knowledge – concepts of knowledge and the limits of what can be known
*Knowledge of psychology- concepts of human nature
About the Speaker: Dr. Phil Rosenkrantz
Dr. Phil Rosenkrantz is Professor Emeritus of Industrial & Manufacturing Engineering at Cal Poly Pomona where he has been teaching and consulting for 30 years and served as Department Chair from 1990-1997. He was also founding Coordinator of the MSQA Program at CSU Dominguez Hills from 1986-1989. Phil was an engineering supervisor for General Motors prior to entering academia. Educational background includes Doctor of Education in Organizational Leadership from Pepperdine University; MS in Statistics from UC Riverside; MS in Industrial Administration from Purdue University; and B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Kettering University (formerly GMI). P.E. (California). 2005 Recipient of the Simon Collier Award. Distinguished Engineering Educator, Los Angeles Council of Engineers & Scientists, 2009. George P. Hart Award for Outstanding Faculty Leadership 1999. Outstanding Teacher Award for the College of Engineering 2012. Phil has been active in ASQ and ASEE (American Society for Engineering Education). Over the years Phil has been an active volunteer with community organizations including the Boy Scouts of America (8 years), the Board of Directors of Eastside Christian Schools (27 years), and the U.S. Forest Service (16 years). His passions include working as a volunteer ranger, hiking the John Muir Trail, going to Disneyland…and outdoor cooking of any kind.
